William Saliba: A Target for Manchester United and Tottenham, Yet His Heart Belonged to Arsenal

In the annals of elite Premier League football, the ascent of William Saliba stands as a testament to perseverance and undeniable talent. Amidst a backdrop of fervent pursuit from several top-tier clubs, Saliba has securely entrenched himself within Arsenal's defensive ranks.

The ills of his absence due to injury in the prior season reverberated cruelly for manager Mikel Arteta, as Arsenal's championship ambitions unraveled during the decisive stretch. Arteta, however, must surely count his blessings that Saliba remains a pivotal asset, given the fervent interest that surrounded the young prodigy's services.

Arsenal's meticulously charted his trajectory for years before executing their move in 2019, subsequently orchestrating a loan-back arrangement to Saint-Étienne. Yet, they weren't solitary in their pursuits, as Manchester United too sought to secure his defensive prowess. An astonishing ascent from relative obscurity to such a pivotal decision-making juncture highlighted Saliba's rapid development.

The allure of a colossal club like Manchester United naturally caught Saliba's attention, but his allegiance shifted perceptibly when Arsenal's intentions surfaced. The roots of his affinity for the Gunners run deep, with the club's rich French heritage, steered by iconic figures such as Arsène Wenger, Thierry Henry, and Robert Pirès, resonating profoundly.

The saga, however, unfolded with United's futile pursuit, soon followed by a late overture from Tottenham Hotspur in a bid to prize him from the Emirates. Alas, it should have been apparent that swaying a dedicated Gooner from his allegiance is nigh impossible, especially amid a fervent Arsenal resurgence. In July 2020, Saliba candidly professed his admiration, telling L'Équipe, "I have a crush on Arsenal."

Despite this apparent union of purpose, the narrative nearly took a tragic twist when Arteta, upon his return to the club in 2020, omitted Saliba from the European squad roster. This prompted another sojourn, this time to Nice in January 2021, followed by a stint at Marseille where he endeared himself to the fans.

Marseille's fervent desire to retain the defender coincided with former Gunners star Matteo Guendouzi's attempts to influence him. In the end, the dream of donning Arsenal's colors persevered, a decision that has proven fortuitous for all parties involved.

In the current juncture, Saliba is undeniably Arsenal's linchpin defender, garnering comparisons to the likes of Raphael Varane and Virgil van Dijk. The culmination of their endeavors has been highlighted by the summer's elongated contract agreement with the French international, thereby solidifying Arsenal's defensive might. Adorning the revered number 4 jersey, Saliba has evolved into a formidable force, and opposing Premier League strikers apprehend the formidable challenge of breaching his formidable defense.
